Carlisle Infant School

Chicken Run Team

Thanks to a grant received from The Ernest Cook Trust – Learning from the Land, we have welcomed four chickens, supplied by ‘Charlotte’s Chickens’ and established them into their new home situated behind the large climbing frame in the playground.

We had a whole school assembly and welcomed Sara Ward from Hen Corner, who illustrated the benefits of keeping chickens and the care they will need to be given. The children have named the chickens Lulu, Wiggins, Queenie and Mo. The children decided the names by voting from the most popular ones suggested. The names seemed to have been influenced by the Jubilee and Olympic events of 2012.

The chickens have settled into school life and have become accustomed to their new celebrity status. So far three are regularly laying eggs which are raffled each week to children.

We have a very successful ‘Chicken Run Team’ in place that is run by Sarah Schleich, a member of staff, and is made up of parents/carers and children from the Carlisle community who care for the chickens welfare on a daily basis including weekends and holidays. Without their continued support this project would not have been possible. The chickens have been a great addition to Carlisle and are enriching our curriculum.
